  • noun A method of cell-conjugation in which nuclear changes are suspended for vegetative growth between nuclear fusion (karyapsis) and chromatin fusion (mitapsis). The cellular structures of the higher plants and animals are built of paragamic cells, the nuclei having double sets of chromosomes.
