  • noun A revival movement in art and literature preceding the Renaissance proper, especially that which began in the reign of the Emperor Frederick II. (1194–1250), when a definite attempt was made to revive interest in ancient art. The finest monuments of this movement are certain medals of the emperor and the sculpture of Niccola Pisano.
