But here’s an interesting idea of something that might be possible with a pykrete ship that isn’t possible as far as I know with today’s ships: Self cleaning.

Since you’re cooling the surface of the pykrete to keep it from melting even though it melts quite slowly anyways, why not cool it enough so that some thin layer of ice builds up along the outer hull, and then whenever the ship needs cleaning, simply shake off the outer layer of ice?

I suggested to the seasteading instute forums that they might consider pykrete (which I’ve blogged about before) as a building material, and the conversation has spawned a number of interesting ideas, such as constructing pykrete with some sort of seaweed pulp instead of wood pulp (or with a hydroponically grown plant pulp).
