  • noun A genus of heteromerous beetles, typical of the family Pyrochroidæ, and comprising about a dozen species, of which 2 are found in North America, 1 in Japan, and the rest in Europe. P. coccinea and P. rubens are known as cardinal beetles, from their red color.
