This background would cast doubt on the supposition that three months before he died St Thomas became a doctrinaire Muslim when a gift of contemplation from the Holy Spirit (run al quddus in Islamic terms) caused him to terminate his multi-volume Summa Theologica in mid-sentence and refer to all he had ever written as "only straw" in comparison with what he now beheld.
