Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A valve by which the brakes of a continuous train-brake may be released. In early forms the brakes were let off by releasing pressure in the trainpipe. In automatic brakes the pressure must be let off the brake-cylinder and the triple valve be thrown, or else the brakes go on again. See air-brake and triple valve.
