  • noun A cover-plate; a plate that covers all or a part of a valve to relieve it of pressure, thus enabling it to be more easily moved. See pressure-plate.
  • noun A cover-plate so arranged that if the pressure from underneath the valve exceeds the normal or desired limit, the plate will lift, thus relieving the excess pressure.
