  • noun A genus of plants of the family Papaveraceæ, occurring in southern California and Mexico. From other papaveraceous genera it is distinguished by the stigmas being united at the base into a ring but free at the top. R. Coulteri, the only species, is the California tree-poppy, or matilija poppy, a tall, somewhat shrubby plant bearing very large white hollyhock-like flowers.
