- noun A large genus of pyrenomycetous fungi having mostly carbonaceous superficial perithecia, usually growing upon a subiculum of dark-colored hyphæ. The spores are unicellular and dark brown. About 175 species have been described. They occur chiefly on decaying wood. R. aquila, a common cosmopolitan species, is the type of the genus.
