  • noun A Hindu viol, which has a body made of a single wooden block, elliptical in general contour, flat in front and arched at the back, which is hollowed out to a shell, but with the lower part of the cavity thus formed covered with a stretched skin and with deep lunes in the sides to facilitate bowing. It usually has three strings, and the head is often carved in imitation of a bird or other object. Also serinda.
