As the program's commentary drily notes, this would make shoe salesmen using the device, which was extremely popular in the 20's and 30's, "martyrs to commerce".

A friend of mine vividly remembers these--mostly because as a kid, she kept jumping on the thing while her mother wasn't looking. So far, she's fine. :-)
