-
Assuming your primary signal (main-lobe from a directional antenna) is pointing at your desired signal, and each canceller element is omni-directional, the GSC actually steers nulls (spatially) towards sidelobe interferers.
-
The generalized sidelobe canceller is nothing more than the top-level description of a beamformer.
-
The correlated signals across the array, after blocking the desired signal, represents the sidelobe interference from just about anything, but usually a jammer of some sort.
-
However these other frequencies do not cause a trivially understood response in the DFT, they cause a response associated with a sinc curve (i.e, sin x/x), and also cause sidelobe responses in other frequency bins along the sinc relationship (this relationship can be modified using weighting factors, but they are not appropriate in this type of analysis).
-
FWIW, a generalized sidelobe canceller is sort of the mother of all adaptive filtering schemes assuming multiple inputs.
-
A narrower field of view with less sidelobe "leakage" is both an asset and a drawback, depending on the situation.

We've already discussed the sidelobe propagation foul-up in the original PESA design, the THALES who failed to do the actaul physics calculations right, were never able to fix.

sidelobe: Sorry to say, but according to traditional chinese astrology, Horse & Rat are very bad combinations, a lot of sparks perhaps but ultimately not meant to last.
