  • noun A large genus of hymenomycetous fungi of the family The-lephoraceæ, having the pileus usually coriaceous or woody, and the hymenium smooth. The plants are either resupinate and adnate or pileate. About 250 species have been described. They are widely distributed and grow on dead wood. S. hirsutum is a common species, usually saprophytic, but occasionally acting as a wound-parasite.
