I tried to get sylpheed-claws-gtk2 running on dapper accessing an imap mailbox over SSL and sylpheed doesn't do anything.

Yes. sylpheed-claws in dapper is broken (IMAPS doesn't work).

Third, it doesn't crash when I download my GBs of mailspool, or my ubuntu-users ML folder from my imap with over 40k of messages, whereas evolution and sylpheed are crashing and mutt is hanging quite some time, because of the imap folder cache

Portable by simply renaming sample-sylpheed.ini. to sylpheed.ini.
