The new species, named Distichodus teugelsi after the late Belgian ichthyologist Guy Teugels by Victor Mamonekene and Emmanuel Vreven, is distinguished from congeners except D. decemmaculatus in having only a single row (vs. two) of bicuspid teeth on the lower jaw.
