Not quite, it's simply the case that the piston prevents you from properly free-floating the barrel, since you have (relatively loosely toleranced) moving parts attached to the barrel and you cannot guarantee that they will behave in exactly the same way from shot to shot, thereby interfering with the barrel harmonics.
