The udad dal, bengal gram, fennel seeds and curry leaves are not added in a typical Iyer style roast, I have incorporated some Chettinad flavours in this.

For tempering - heat 1 tsp oil, to this add 1/2 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp udad dal, few curry leaves.

I too hv tried my hands as a teen kid for grinding idli batter, udad daal on it and gave up instantly :D as I was not angling the stone correctly, the grinding stone always slipped out of the dent!
