From Middle English underking, from Old English undercing, undercyning ("under-king, viceroy"), equivalent to under- + king. Cognate with Dutch onderkoning ("viceroy"), German Unterkönig ("underking"), Danish onderkonge ("underking"), Swedish underkung ("underking").
He was a son of the underking Cenred and ascended the West-Saxon throne in 688, a year before the death of his predecessor Caedwalla.
