For what its worth, assuming you have Orion and Altair, couldn't you build a kind of "mission module" by starting with the Altair ascent stage (which features an airlock), tossing the engines, adding a sort of a "trunk" for unpressurized cargo and support for the "soft capture" mechanism they're installing?
