This face of a smiling chubby girl, with two spots upon her forehead-a mask of baked clay -- is the traditional image of Ame-no-uzume-no-mikoto, commonly called Otafuku, whose merry laughter lured the Goddess of the Sun out of the cavern of darkness.

And the suzu -- the strange bronze instrument with its cluster of bells which the miko uses in her dance -- still preserves the form of that bamboo-spray to which Ame-no-uzume-no-mikoto fastened small bells with grass, ere beginning her mirthful song. º4
