From Middle English wangere, from Old English wangere ("pillow, bolster"), from Proto-Germanic *wangarjaz, *wangijan (“pillow, cushion”), from Proto-Indo-European *wenǵ- (“neck, cheek”). Cognate with Old High German wangari ("pillow"), Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌲𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌹 (waggari, "pillow"). Related to Old English wange ("cheek"). More at wang.
