  • noun In phonetics, the spoken word considered not as made up of independent sounds, each expressed by a letter of the alphabet, but as a continuous series of an infinite number of sounds; and considered also as the expression, not of a series of volitions (for prefix, suffix, etc.), but of a single unified volition.
