geekmode I believe it stems from the old days of wordprocessors, where computers weren't graphically advanced enough to display bold type, so *...* was used to instruct the printer to make that word bold, the in the early days of text-only e-mail techies continued to use it as other techies would know what it meant... and it's mostly stuck.
