- noun Metadihydroxy-anthraquinone; a yellow compound, C6H4-, contained in crude natural purpurin and prepared from this substance by reduction. It crystallizes in lustrous needles, melts at 262–263° C., and may be sublimed. Also called purpuroxanthin.
