You could also achieve a lean and good-looking XFCE by apt-getting the xfce4 and xubuntu-defautlt-settings packagesin place of lxde (don't install xubuntu-desktop though): sudo apt-get install xorg gdm xfce4 xubuntu-default-settings synaptic firefox paintbox

On the old computers, I use xubuntu and it's been lightening fast and the newest distros of ubuntu rival OS X and Vista, in my opinion.
