Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • noun A genus of wood-peckers: so called from the extensive striping of the plumage. It has covered a number of American forms, but was based on the common red-bellied woodpecker of the United States, and is thus a synonym of Centurus (itself often merged in Melanerpes). See cut under Centurus.
