Zack Jones, Volunteer Coordinator for Metro-Help Hotline in Chicago, back in the late 70s, early 80s, used to say this to people on the crisis line all the time. At the time Metro-Help had the contract for the National Runaway Switchboard. Zack's Law was about hurting being a part of the cycle of loving, and how, in the end, it was always worthwhile to love.Zack was absolutely brill.
Zack's Law states that, "If you love someone, you're gonna hurt. The amount you hurt will be in exact proportion to the amount you love. It's ALWAYS worth it."

brill is also used as a short form for the word "brilliant". I first heard it used in 1982, by Larry M. West, of Chicago, Illinois
