  • "An upscale airpark community, which had been the source of controversy in recent weeks, is now planned for a 617-acre tract in the north-central portion of Jefferson County adjacent to U.S. Highway 11E. Developers of the sprawling facility disclosed their plans Thursday at the site of the new J.P. Wtaugh Aeropark and Resort, which is planned for a site near Rocktown Road.

It promises to feature a 5,000-foot runway, hangars capable of housing more than 150 small planes, a restaurant, clubhouse, tennis courts, a swimming pool and dozens of houses on five-acre lots, according to Jon Waugh, senior consultant on the project for Smoky Mountain Investments, which is developing the facility."
