Hindi. a piece of cloth (plain or ornate) used to cover the hair or for decoration. Also called dupatta. It is also a metaphor for virtue and maidenhead (akin to the veil in English); to have one's chunari stolen or rent is to be 'taken advantage of' in some form or other (the 70s courtesan classic Pakeezah features a song whose chorus is "these people have stolen my dupatta", which isn't about rape so much as being sold to rich lechers). The filmi tawaif always wears a chunari (see here).
