Accidentally, I've just seen a horrifying coprophagia video (edited), and I couldn't watch that shocking scene for more than 30 secs...
I can't believe it, but there are some people who really enjoy paraphilias like coprophagia or golden rain. That's too much dirty sex for me!

Oh jebus. I've been dreading this moment. Not the moment that I watched a video of two women eating their own shit, though I didn't particularly enjoy that. But dreading the moment when I was faced with censoring Wordie, or not doing so, and having material on it that is... well, just super gross.
So peoples, let's vote, or discuss, or whatever. In the name of free discussion and all that, er, shit, do I put the link to hard-core shit eating pornography back on? Or in the name of decency and not fucking totally grossing everyone out, do I leave it off, and become a despicable censor? It's a lose-lose situation! Opinions?

Ok, we're all adults here, right? Hrm, actually, how the hell would I know that...
But I figured I couldn't really ask for opinions without leaving the poop video linked. So, see for yourself, if you want, but be warned. Yuck.

john commented on the word coprophagia
Oh, looks like frangarnes just edited the link him or herself. FG, I'm not coming down on you, btw. Just opening up a discussion. Nothing's forbidden here, but I was kind of shocked, I have to admit. Figured it was an opportune time to talk about what the lines are on Wordie, or whether there should be any at all.

Ok John, I'm sorry. I agree: it's better NOT to illustrate this word!
I was watching at Youtube some videos about the reaction of people who saw this video, and then my curiosity did the rest...

No worries frangarnes, the curiosity got me, too.
I'm off to see the new Wes Anderson movie (yay!). I'll be curious to see if anyone else weighs in when I'm back. Ciao.

I agree with your proposed action John. Since you're not censoring a word, but video pornography, I would have no problem with you removing the link. Wordie is not designed to display pornographic or overly disgusting imagery.
You don't have to accept & live with whatever anyone feels like doing to your site! If that sort of material became uncontrolled here, you would lose too many good members.
We all respect the fact that you would never abuse your power to control the content on Wordie.

John: I've probably already stated that the charm of this site is in the relative absence of video links. I really don't think you need spend much time beating up on yourself for not providing a visual link to coprophagia.

frangarnes commented on the word coprophagia
I've to say that:
1. It wasn't a embedded video but a html link.
2. I erased the link even earlier I read John's reply (a few minutes after posting).
3. I don't like coprophagia or similar filthy things and I don't support them.
4. Posting such disgusting link was a mistake and I take the blame for it.
5. If you watched that video (I couldn't), I hope you didn't vomit your keyboard.

I would prefer the absence of such videos. A bit of adult language here and there is one thing, but videos like those that are described are ridiculous. I'm fine with people linking to a site as long as that remark that the link is obscene.
In general, I trust John, and if he thinks it is inappropriate, I wouldn't mind it being removed, although hopefully that will be very rare.

frangarnes : not to worry. Let me just say here how much I've been enjoying your contributions to the site to date. I just got back to the U.S. having spent six months in Spain, trying to learn Spanish, so I'm getting a great review.

frangarnes: I agree with sionnach. I admire you for correcting your mistake so quickly. I've made my share of mistakes with my offbeat comments.
If a person tries different things, he or she will certainly make mistakes.
We all make mistakes, but not all of us are as honorable as you seem to be frangarnes!

Oh wow, I missed a real party on this page!
Frangarnes, I agree with sionnach and others: your contribution to the site is valued and appreciated, and please don't feel that you need to apologize.
That said... I really am really really glad you took the link down! :)
And John: your hand-wringing is admirable in a sense, but unnecessary. It's your site! If it grosses you out, don't feel bad about taking it down. Yarb said it soooo well: if we want to watch shit-eating, we can do so elsewhere. :)
Sionnach, I also agree with you re: the beautiful dearth of video and stuff like that here. But I've said that elsewhere.
My, what interesting conversations happen around here....

And why is there an earworm tag here?

uselessness commented on the word coprophagia
I'm also late. But I agree, too. It's John's site, and he should always have the last word in iffy situations like this one. I think he ought to reserve the right to censor even text in extreme situations, at his own discretion. We're a very good-natured community here, and I think the closest we've come to such a point was one offensive list that caught some attention back in the day.
Considering that's the worst/most controversial incident that I'm aware of, we're in pretty good shape. But the nature of this kind of site makes it ripe for abuse, and John should be prepared to take action should it become necessary. I'm not a fan of frivolous habitual censorship, of course, but it must be an option in some rare situations.

This reminds me of a project from early this summer, which I'd kind of forgotten about, a WordPress plugin I wrote called yellow card. It adds functionality that lets visitors to a site moderate comments, and it tries to strike a balance between censorship and openness. What it does is make flagged comments "click to see", rather than just remove them. So they're still available, but not as visible.
There's been no need for anything like this on Wordie, which will remain as open as possible as long as possible. But it's in my back pocket if needed (I'll just have to rewrite it in ruby).
Why is this word tagged 'earworm'?

uselessness commented on the word coprophagia
That might be a good way to handle it. And maybe a similar feature for marking tags as irrelevant? ;-)

myrtletheturtle commented on the word coprophagia
Coprophagia may be a sign of insanity in humans, or perhaps merely perversity, but in some animals it is a legitimate form of digestion: rabbits guts cannot digest grass particularly well (its tough old stuff, cows solve the problem by having 4 stomachs) so they eat their food twice in order to get every last nutrient out of it. This means that they have to eat their own faeces (and no one thinks they are mad)

Prolagus commented on the word coprophagia
Coprophagia in rabbits is in fact called caecotrophy since what is re-eaten is different in composition from feces. (It doesn't make it nicer to watch your pet rabbit doing it on your rug).
