The slight entertainment taken between dinner and supper; denominated from the hour commonly observed in former times, which was four o'clock P.M. The term is now vulgarly appropriated to tea, although the hour is changed. Formerly, it denoted some stronger beverage. Dr. Jamieson's Scottish Dictionary and Supplement, 1841.
