  • Now we're talking! There's a WeirdNet definition!

A hoo-hah, to me, is any private part not normally exposed, and not spoken of in polite conversation. It can be (notice I'm not trying to be polite):

    ass

    coochie

    boobs

    nuts

    weewee

It can also mean something like whatchamacallit or thingamajig--an object you can't think of the name of just at the moment.

  • Excellent! I'm adding it to my Hold My Place list. :-)

  • I've heard it both ways - I think the "euphemism for unseemly body parts" use is a Southern thing.

    November 28, 2007

  • I'm not southern, though.

    November 28, 2007

  • Huh. Maybe I'm just thinking of Blanche from the Golden Girls.

    November 28, 2007

  • Oh, that could explain it. :) Blanche definitely talked about her hoo-hah a lot.

  • I thought it referred to the obnoxious noise emitted continually by the scenery-chewing Al Pacino in "Scent of a Woman".

    November 28, 2007

  • No, that's a common error. That usage is spelled hooah.

  • The Onion apparently spells this word slightly differently, but I still think hoo-hah works best.

  • Compare ha-ha.

I have never heard hoo-hah used in Australia with the sense that our American colleagues ascribes to it. The WordNet definition is exactly how it goes, e.g.

"I couldn't sleep last night for all the hoo-ha going on at the party next door."

  • Hee hee.

Around these parts (no pun intended--oh, hell; pun intended), we use it both ways. Usually the context helps sort out which is which. ;-)
