  • Originally a yoruba goddess passed down to Brazilians who celebrate Candomble, Iemanja is the goddess of the sea, celebrated on new years eve.

Jorge Amado wrote his novel, Mar Morto (Sea of Death) about the desperate romantic (?) life of fishermen and their relationship with Iemanja. There are some who argue that the success of his novel made Candomble (and Umbanda, a variation on the same afro-catholic theme) trendy....(I'm not one of them :))
