The wiktionary definition appears to be inaccurate. Megohm is the more commonly used than megaohm. - ngram viewer.

Megaohm is the official spelling. Megohm is just a popular variant. The BIPM's SI Brochure</a> uses the example of the gigaohm.

It's not a 'variant' or 'alternate spelling' if it's the primary usage of the word.
It's also been around since 1885.
