Cool list. Favorited.
I wonder if you might consider adding words as you see/hear them in the media. Sometimes there are some real zingers out there, e.g. "classical oboist community." ?!

That may be a little too obscure. ;-) But I think the media are the usual source for these phrases. I mean, no one actually says these in real life with a straight face, right? Let me know if you hear any other (relatively mainstream) ones. The list would be ridiculously long if I just turned every obscure hobby into a community: "the cup stacking community" ... "the air guitar community" ... "the mouth breathing community." Good grief! :-)

Well, yeah--I was using "oboist" as an example of the idiocy of making every possible noun into an adjective for "community." So I agree with not adding that specific example--I was just wondering if you intended to continue the list, though, with other examples actually seen in print or online, or heard via broadcast, etc. And it seems the answer is "yes," so I'll keep an eye out. Cool list!

p.s. the mouth breathing community... HA HA HAHA!!

Two days ago I heard "the immigrant community" on NPR.

uselessness, AbraxasZugzwang posted on his list It's a Man's World a link link to a site that uses this priceless phrase:
"Balls to the Wall" is a very old saying in the U.S. Navy P-3 community...
I thought of you.

I'm not sure if I dare add something so specific to this list. How big can that "community" be? Though by definition, I suppose it would only need three people. 'Tis bizarre, anyway.

I wasn't suggesting you add it. But man! The guy obviously thought it was, you know, a big community of pilots. Maybe it is, for all I know...

I'm sure the whole community gets together to play poker on Thursday nights. And the turnout is so overwhelming that the whole group decides to play solitaire instead.

chained_bear commented on the list a-collectivist-utopia
Well, it's probably somewhat larger than *that*. I mean, it's a certain type of plane the Navy used extensively in the past, so there must be a few pilots and mechanics left. But still, to label it a "community." Takes some balls. Whether they're to the wall or not, I don't know.

Probably not; whatever members the community may still have probably aren't running quite as fast these days. :-)
A thought just occurred to me. Is there a solitaire community? We should start one. We can have leagues and tournaments and stuff. Sorry, membership is now closed.

A solicitor just came by the office to hype his wonderful new technology that has increased profits 100% across the business community. He told us all about what a marvel it was, how effective it was... but wouldn't tell us what it was. Just jargon and buzzwords, beating around the bush. We demanded he cut to the chase; he was taken aback; he stammered, "well, it's a sign... but it's not just any sign... it's an amazing sign."
Boss's response: "GET OUT OF MY OFFICE."

Smart boss.
Here's one you may not have heard before (from a company memo): the education-seeking community. Yikes.

Who are they? Students? Prospective students? Student wannabes? Homeschoolers? ;-)

reesetee commented on the list a-collectivist-utopia
They are prospective college students and "adult learners," which is another goofball phrase.

Found another one, u: the aviation community (meaning airline pilots and air traffic controllers). I wonder whether it's related to the U.S. Navy P-3 community? ;-)

uselessness commented on the list a-collectivist-utopia
That's a good one, and quite a bit more legit than those P-3ers. ;-) Thanks!

Haha, I just read about the "disco community." I had to add it!

Wow. The disco community is still around?? I assumed they'd have packed up their platform shoes long ago. ;-)
