word categories - not just -nyms

I seem to run into a lot of these words. This is probably because I hang out at places like wordie. :) It's funny that there is five other words that mean the same thing as contronym. It just goes to show how messy English is.

contronym, Janus word, auto-antonym, autantonym, antagonym, self-antonym - A word having opposite or contradictory meanings, as sanction or cleave.

portmanteau, blend, frankenword - A word formed by merging the sounds and meanings of two different words, as chortle, from chuckle and snort.

nonce word - a word occurring, used, or made only once or for a special occasion

neologism, coinage - A new word, expression, or usage.

eponym - A name or phrase formed from or including a person's name, e.g. Theiler's disease, Cowper's gland

eponymous of or relating to eponym (adj)

onomatopoeia - a word that sounds like what it means like buzz or hiss

double entendre - A word or phrase having a double meaning, especially when the second meaning is risqué

mondegreen - A series of words that result from the mishearing or misinterpretation of a statement or song lyric. For example, I led the pigeons to the flag for I pledge allegiance to the flag.

antonomasia - The use of a trademark to describe a generic item, such as Kleenex for tissue or Jello for gelatin.

meronym - A word that names a part of a larger whole. I.E. faces being used to describe people. E.g. “I see several familiar faces present.”

tmesis - Separation of the parts of a compound word by one or more intervening words Example: "abso freakin' lutely"
