The main idea of Infotention is filtering information. Generally, these filters are powered by computers. There have been two main types of filtering identified. First, Content Based filtering compares the preferences of the user and the content of the items to get the most proficient answer. Secondly, Collaborative Based Filtering bases off of the preference of other people who have looked for the same items. Some websites, such as netvibes and twitter, allow people to create lists that allow them to see only what they want.

Having too much information can be an issue. Information overload is being exposed to more information than necessary to complete a task. The constant stimulation can bring on stress and anxiety. It is also very prominent in teachings of Group Dynamics.

Blogger John Robb explained in his blog, "Is Scanning and Situational Awareness a Cure For Multi-Tasking Drift?" that people may check there email while listening to music and talking on the phone. Gives the person performing the act a sense of success.

Psycho-Social-Techno skills is a term coined by the famous Howard Rheingold. He basically states that to have mindful infotention, a person must possess these skills. First they must have psychological skills like mental imagery, attentional focus and control, and anxiety control. Second, they must possess social skills such as communicating an interacting both verbally and non-verbally. Finally, they must possess technology skills such as Online literacy, critical thinking, and adaptability.
If one can combine all of these skills, successful mindful infotention will follow. The person will be able to filter quickly and achieve the best possible answer they need.
