  • From the Clint Eastwood film, BIRD, about jazz musician Charlie Parker. This word, demur, is featured in a scene set in a mental hospital where Bird is taken to dry out. His indignation when using it precipitates a fight he provokes with another patient;

    I asked that...

    ...misguided, officious young woman...

    ...if she would administer

    my paraldehyde...

    ...and she demurred.

    Demurred.

    I am not a laboratory animal.

    I am in pain here.

  • From Planet of the Apes. When Caesar asks permission to play in the redwoods, the doctor is amazed when Caesar first asks permission, identifying his outstretched hand as a supplicating gesture.

    Most of the examples of this word use it in a religious context in relation to a Creator. But supplicants are found in many areas of life and work (as if those two things, life and work, are separate).

  • Amazed that an Iranian (Javadi) for whom English would be a second language would use this "niche" word in characterizing the actions of Carrie Mathison. Used a lot to refer to religious & political zealots; almost medieval. Also happened to be a perfect word choice to apply to Carrie. (Homeland)
