It is either a sub-tribe of the Piegan or a different pronunciation of it. The Piegan are a southern branch of the Blackfoot Tribe of American Indians.

"I couldn't be sure if the employee at the IRS answer desk was a smatchet or merely a gerbil, but the answer given was less than useless." A smatchet is a person pesky with self-importance yet so diametrically opposed to "cool" there is not even a quirk of personality worthy of sticking sarcasm upon. A person who strives - yet fails - to reach the goal of even being annoying.
