The New Yorker style is proudly eccentric, with their use of the diaeresis https://www.grammarly.com/blog/diaeresis/ and their refusal to move forward at the speed of tech for things like Web site and e-mail. The New York Times is also slow to adopt revisions to their style guide. Maybe it's an East Coast thing.
