  • In my first Scrabble Nationals (New Orleans, 2005?), I misspelled this word on my first game, which led to a challenge and surely contributed to that loss. Fast forward a couple of years and I hang a C on a triple-lane, and, with a blank, pull out the necessary letters for IDOCRASE as a triple-triple.

  • I played this word against the venerable Ann Sanfandele during the Big Apple Scrabble tournament (June 28, 2008). She was the top seed in my division. Had she not challenged the word, she would not have lost her turn. This was a weird play because, as it turned out, she had a bingo on her rack (SOUTANES) so her challenge at that moment indicated her certainty that AMBERINA was no good. I won the game by a mere 28 points, and eventually won my division in the 7-game tournament. As of this writing (1/14/09), my only tournament win.
