Gansey, or gansai (in Irish) means a woolen sweater or jumper. Similar to a jersey, it is thought the name comes from Guernsey, another of the Channel Islands. When we were children and we would go stealing apples from a neighbouring orchard, we would say we got a "gansy load" meaning all the apples you could fit in the turned up front of your gansey.
