I've also read the Udon Kids 'Manga titles Swans in Space Vol. 1 (silly fun, and in full color) and The Big Adventures of Majoko Vol. 1 - both are for younger elementary school age readers, will most likely appeal more to girls, and both show girls having all the fun adventures.
