  • Formerly the maple trees were placed in the family Aceraceae by northern-hemisphere botanists. As plant collecting and genetic research moved into the more diverse tropics, it was noticed that the characteristic helicopter half-fruits, (keys) were also present in the soapberry family (Sapindaceae) which includes many tropical vines. Now we know that the maples belong in the Sapindaceae with the many many more diverse subtropical and tropical species. Wow, jumping from one huge family to another.
