  • Small nit to pick: ajax isn't a Java application, it's a set of JavaScript-based techniques to make web applications more responsive. Despite the similar names, Java and JavaScript have almost nothing to do with each other.

    Given its current near-ubiquity in some circles, ajax is pretty young: Microsoft invented the underlying technology (xmlhttprequest) around 2000, but the techniques weren't widely used until Jesse James Garret wrote about them (and coined the term 'ajax') in 2005.
