I have, just today, seen alternate definitions:
1 approaching the complicated, in small steps
1.1 the act of dealing with an overwhelming or difficult task by breaking it down into smaller, more manageable parts. (@HaggardHawks@twitter.com May 1, 2020)
Both of those seem eminently useful beyond the surveying-specific original.
