This is actually a corruption of 'chumbuckness', a term often used by low-level gangster types as a kind of general, non-specific threat. Believed to derive from the fate of Eliot Ness's crime-fighting older brother, whose mangled body was pulled from lake Michigan on Christmas Eve 1931.
