  • Really not as bad as it might sound.

  • Hystero- means "uterus" and -graphy means "writing, or, record-making", but what does -salpingo- (from salpinx?) mean?

  • Contrast medium (which shows up on an x-ray) is injected through the neck of the uterus, and observed to see if it escapes from the ends of the fallopian tubes. Used to check for tubal patency in infertility investigation.

  • Ah, so salpingo- refers to the tubes.

  • Thanks, Dr. SoG! Is this not also called uterosalpingography? Or am I making that up?

  • I don't know, but it seems like there are alternate names for almost everything on this list, so it seems likely.

Also... not just used in infertility investigation, but for women who (for example) don't ovulate regularly because of PCOS or another condition.... Although that's the leading cause of infertility, it's also a condition that needs to be treated regardless of one's reproductive intentions.
