  • a.k.a. "Karelian bear dog." "This is a breed that was developed centuries ago by the Finns but perfected by the Russians, who introduced into its makeup the blood of the Utchak sheepdog (just the blood? Not anything else? That's kinda weird).... Originally an elk hunter, the Karelian bear dog (soon grew tired of elk meat and) was bred to a more robust size (the book says it's "medium") so that it could be used for bear hunting (hate to see what a "large" can do--hunt elephants?). It will put a bear to flight or attack it with great pugnacity." (Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs, 1980; sarcastic comments, Chained_Bear, 2007)
