Cricket jargon - a batsman who is sent in to bat in a postion higher than his usual rank in the order, usually toward the end of a day's play. The aim is to protect the better batsmen by not having them play at a time when they have little opportunity to score runs and may risk being dismissed due to tiredness. Usually does not carry a torch or bell.
